Renewable Energy

Renewable Energy

The model purpose is to learn about:

○ The types of renewable energy

○ Are they really sustainable?

○ Who is the leading renewable energy equipment manufacturer?

○Who is leading in producing renewable energy?

○What is the trend in renewable energy in 2019?

Renewable Energy is the energy sources that can be replenished.

They are:
  • Solar

  • Wind

  • Hydroelectric

  • Geothermal

  • Biomass

(is an organic substance that comprises biogas, landfill gas, ethanol, alcohol fuels, solid waste, wood and wood waste, and biodiesel.)
  • BioFuels

  • Nuclear

  • Tidal Energy

  • Wave Power

  • Radiant Energy

  • Hydrogen

What is the energy generated in the US?

Renewables in United States

According to Fortune, 18% of all electricity in the US was produced by renewable sources in 2017, including solar, wind, and hydroelectric dams. That is up from 15% in 2016. Solar and wind projects made up roughly 62% of new power construction in 2017, as their cost continues to plummet. And 2.9 gigawatts of new renewable energy projects were initiated in 2017, while 12.5 gigawatts worth of coal plants are set to shut down in 2018.

Many cities and states are far outpacing the rest of the US and have taken greater steps towards 100% renewable energy: Pittsburgh, Penn: in June 2017, Mayor Bill Peduto has vowed to not only heed the guidelines of the Paris Agreement but will also work towards 100% clean and renewable energy. In July 2017, Pittsburgh released its Climate Action Plan that establishes a goal for 100% renewable energy, and 100% fossil fuel free by 2030.

The Importance of Renewable Energy

Protecting Global Climate

Fossil fuel had damaged the ozone layer leading to climate change and a polluted atmosphere. The use of renewable energy, which produces 0 emissions, will let the ozone heal and protect the global climate.

Renewable Energy in Other Countries

In March 2018, Portugal produced 203.6% of the energy required to meet the country’s electrical demand. 55% of that energy was produced through hydropower, while 42% came from wind.

In 2018, Germany briefly covered 100% of its energy demand through renewable energy. In 2017, it produced 36.1 % of its total power needs with renewable energy, which is a record. Germany generated half of its power from the sun.

In 2017, China has announced that Qinghai Province - a territory the size of Texas, had gone a week relying on 100% renewable energy including solar, wind, and hydropower. In the same year, China also released aerial photos of its newest giant solar farm, which will be able to produce 3.2 billions kilowatt-hours of solar energy in 25 years.

The largest coal mining company in the world (produced 82% of India’s coal), announced the closure of dozens of coal mines and the cancellation of plans for dozens of new coal-fired generation stations. This cut happened because the cost of solar power was significantly undercutting fossil fuel. The Indian government has announced it will not build any more coal plants after2022 and predicts renewables will generate 57% of its power by 2027.

Biofuel and Bioliquids

According to EU Energy Directive, biofuel (used in transport) and bioliquids (used for electricity and heating) have to meet the following criteria to be able to count towards national renewables energy targets:

Zero Emission Credit (ZEC)

In August 2016, the New York Public Service Commission (“NYPSC”) issued the Clean Energy Standard Order (“CES Order”) adopting the ZEC program as part of a larger effort to reduce greenhouse‐gas emissions. The program allocates ZECs to qualifying in-state nuclear energy generators that are financially “at-risk” of closing. New York utilities are then required to purchase ZECs from either New York State Energy Research and Development Authority or the nuclear generators based on the price set by the NYPSC. The initial price of each ZEC is calculated using the Social Cost of Carbon; however, the price of a ZEC decreases if a market price index, the calculation of which includes the clearing prices of certain regional wholesale energy auctions, exceeds a certain amount. Accordingly, nuclear generators receive a fixed amount under the ZEC program for each MWh generated in addition to what the generators receive in the NYISO wholesale auctions.

Tesla - Tesla Solar

Tesla being the world leading manufacturer of electric cars is also leading in producing powerful battery to store energy from renewable sources, especially solar.
