Elon Musk Projects

This report draws analytics about Tesla Projects. The analysis is comprised of 156 documents extracted from different sources, published in the period from December 01, 2018 to March 15, 2019.

It is rare to find someone who has not heard about Elon Musk and his accomplishments as well as struggles with Tesla. So, we thought it would be a good idea to write about some of his lesser known projects that aim to change the world through innovation. Listed below you will read some interesting artifacts about Solar City, Open AI, SpaceX, Starlink, and the Boring Company.

SolarCity:

SolarCity is an idea that Elon Musk came up with to solve the problem of sustainable and scalable production of energy. SolarCity designs, finances, and installs solar panels; in addition to, merging with Tesla to work on developing Tesla vehicle charging stations, and batteries that would store the energy that solar panels generate, as opposed to sending it directly into a power grid. This shows that Solar City and Tesla are two sides of the same coin and that together they can drastically reduce the time it takes us to adopt sustainable energy as a standard. Currently, Solar City maintains a third of the nation’s solar systems; and it has been projected that within 10 years, SolarCity will be the largest maker of solar systems in the US. Clearly, one can see that Tesla and Solar City are driven to be leaders in the sustainable energy industry.

If this was not enough, Elon explains optimization to a greater level. Obviously, Tesla is about helping solve the consumption of energy in a sustainable manner, but you need the production of energy in a sustainable manner, Elon explained. To address the production side of the energy equation, Musk came up with the idea for SolarCity, which his cousins Lyndon and Peter Rive cofounded in 2006. The company designs, finances and installs solar panels. In collaboration with Tesla Motors, it also constructs electric-car charging stations.

SolarCity provides the solar arrays that prove power to the Tesla charging stations, but it has also become one of the largest solar utilities in the nation, installing, maintaining a third of the nation’s solar panel systems.

Within ten years, SolarCity would grow to be the largest maker of solar power systems in the U.S SolarCity is in the process of completing a merger with Tesla, which was announced in June 2016. Since 2012 the companies have been collaborating to develop batteries that store energy generated by solar panels rather than feeding them directly into the power grid.

OpenAI:

AI has the capacity to be the savior or the destroyer of mankind. Elon Musk sees the potential of what AI can do for our society, yet he is also very cautious about how AI should be used. To be cautious, Musk has invested in AI startups and formed a nonprofit artificial intelligence research firm, Open AI with a $1billion investment. The firm’s mission is to, “counteract large corporations who may gain too much power by owning super-intelligence systems devoted to profits, as well as governments which may use AI to gain power and even oppress their citizenry.” The nonprofit status of the company prohibited the charity from accepting initial funds. In response, the Musk Foundation gave $10 million to YC.org, whose mission statement, “promises to find solutions to vexing problems”. As you can see, Elon Musk is committed to finding AI solutions that will only benefit humanity.

SpaceX:

SpaceX has been in the news lately for a failed test of the Crew Dragon test vehicle that will be used to ferry astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) from Earth. SpaceX is known for its ambitious plans for the future of space exploration. So far, Musk’s SpaceX is the first private company to send a spacecraft to the ISS, and has the lofty goal to colonize planets and satellites beyond Earth, and is looking to establish a permanent lunar base and a Mars colony by 2022. Its success will continue to secured future funding and faith that SpaceX can revolutionize space exploration. Despite the failures SpaceX continues to experience, they have shown that they are able to learn from their mistakes and continue to innovate on the “new frontier”.

SpaceX Moment of Truth:

The company said, if the first SpaceX rocket launch doesn't succeed by the time we've spent $100 million, we will stop the company. That will be enough for three attempted launches. What happened to the first launch? $30 million later, it failed. The second? $60 million later, it failed. On the third and last attempt, SpaceX successfully launched. This won SpaceX a $1.6 billion contract from NASA for 12 resupply flights to the station.

Space Exploration:

SpaceX founder and Lead Designer Elon Musk announced the most ambitious plans yet for the colonization of planets and satellites beyond Earth, including the establishment of a lunar base and a permanent Mars colony by 2022.

Starlink:

The Starlink is an initiative/project driven by SpaceX that has a goal of being able to provide global internet access via a satellite network containing up to 12,000 satellites. Musk expects to gain a significant revenue stream from Starlink. Currently, SpaceX has permission to launch 4,425 satellites with the help of Falcon rockets. If SpaceX is able to successfully complete Starlink, they would be able to bring on a new era of connectivity in the world. Although many more people will have the capacity to be connected, they will still need the infrastructure and devices on the Earth’s surface to take full advantage of the Starlink.

Those satellites have already received clearance from the FCC, and SpaceX plans to launch the first elements of the initial 4,425-satellite constellation this year, using Falcon 9 rockets. The company sent up its first two experimental broadband satellites last year and has been tweaking its plans for Starlink as a result of those space-to-ground tests. Eventually, SpaceX wants to build up the network to take in as many as 12,000 satellites in low Earth orbit.

Boring Company:

The Boring Company got an interesting start as a brainchild of Musk, as a solution to LA’s plague of traffic congestion that afflicts the public particularly during rush-hour. The goal Musk’s Boring Company is to solve traffic congestion in an innovative way by boring tunnels under city streets to be able to transform the typical two-dimensional transportation infrastructure to a 3D design. These new tunnels are designed to be cost effective (lowering the present estimated cost at $1 billion/mile, to $10 million/mile) and high-speed (125mph-150mph). This deal sounds almost too good to be true; if the Boring Company is able to deliver on its word, then they will be able to provide an amazing solution to the current traffic problem.

Boring Company Cost Estimates:

Musk’s representatives also unveiled on Tuesday a new tunnel-boring machine they say they hope to have online soon, one that can bore four times faster than the one they’ve been using. Musk said it took about $10 million to build the test tunnel, a far cry from the $1 billion per mile his company says most tunnels take to build. Cost-cutting measures included improving the speed of construction with smarter tools, eliminating middlemen, building more powerful boring machines, and turning the dirt being excavated into bricks and selling them, Musk said.

Boring Company Projects:

One project Musk is planning on, known as the Dugout Loop, would take Los Angeles baseball fans to Dodger Stadium from one of three subway stations. Another would take travelers from downtown Chicago to O’Hare International Airport. Both projects are in the environmental review phase.

Datasource:

Below are the details for the data which were extracted to produce this report.
To produce this report, text documents are collected from most popular forums, social media, webpages, uploaded documents following client provided contexts. After that, multiple techniques are applied to make sure only documents most related to analysis purpose are taken into account. The text corpus is pre-processed through eliminating document duplication, irrelevance, and calculating word lemmatization before it is sourced to machine learning applications to extract insights using custom Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithms. The insights have resulted from a process of considering word meaning, word relationship scoring, and language hidden patterns. In addition, the client provided contexts are also used to perform better-targeted analysis over the full extracted corpus to discover insights in desired aspects.
Document- Content of one web page or one social media post, it is extracted and stored as a document in Addy.
