Earth Day: Protect Our Species

Earth Day 2019 seemed to get far more attention than in previous years. There was a docuseries, Our Planet; that featured a popular fundraising song ‘Earth’ by Lil Dicky. These viral events caused a lot of conversation on how we all can be making small changes in our daily lives to help the planet and our communities.

This year’s Earth Day was on Monday, April 22nd, 2019, the theme was 'Protect Our Species'. It aimed to focus attention to the fast rate extinction of species across the planet.

Earth Day is a day to focus on our planet and its’ well being. A day to help make others become more educated and aware of our environment. On Earth Day we see and hear about the many organizations and/or foundations that are focused on saving the environment. There are many claims that planet Earth could not be in worse shape and that now is a good time to spread environmental awareness about our planet and learn skills to help save Earth.

The first Earth Day was in 1970, and was started to bring attention to environmental protection and preservation.

What the Reddit community is saying:

Communities discuss what they are doing in their everyday lives to make a difference. One of the top topics discussed on Earth Day was plastic pollution and encourage others to reduce plastic use. One tip mentioned is to use reusable bags instead of plastic bags. Many cities are implementing a plastic bag ban as well as issuing fees for using plastic bags to encourage the use of reusable bags.

“We use these mesh reusable bags for produce so that we don’t have to keep using plastic bags.”

“I’ve been trying to use less single-use plastics and to do this I’ve switched to reusable cups! As well as using reusable bags for everything I don’t even get produce bags anymore because I realized I can just put the fruit into my bags on their own.”

"Right now, we can clean up the mess we made. Then we have to find alternatives to plastics. There are ways to make the same products out of biodegradable materials. Once we stop manufacturing what poisons the environment will we see an improvement.”

“Meh, plastic bags are for suckers! Even over paper.. who chooses plastic bags anymore? And I'm not even talking environmentally.. like, who wants to have like 10 plastic bags when you can do the same job with 2 paper ones or one reusable one? I think people just aren't thinking too hard about this bag situation.”
